Facts about Nigel
and Laifong:
We met at Princeton as graduate students in September 1992
We got to know each other through our involvement with the
Princeton chapter of Chi Alpha (a
Christian student organization affiliated with the Assemblies of God),
under the direction of Pastor
Pete Hartwig; we also attended the same
church in Princeton, Nassau
Christian Center (NCC)
We started dating on November 6, 1994
We had a long-distance relationship (Nigel in RI, Laifong still
at Princeton) from December 1994 to June 1996
We became engaged on December 2, 1995
We got married on June 8, 1996 at NCC; Pastor Pete officiated
Our first home (a rented apartment) was in Norton, MA, from June
1996 to July 1998
While in Norton, we both had long commutes: Nigel, 75 minutes
to Newport, RI; Laifong, 90 minutes (commuter train, bus, walk) into
Boston
Our church during our time in Norton was Taunton Assembly of God in
Taunton,
MA, formerly pastored by Rev. Stephen Weber; to receive a daily email
devotional by Pastor Weber, visit his website, Daily Encouragement
We moved to another apartment in Brookline, MA from August 1998
to May 2001; our commutes got much shorter (Nigel, 35 minutes to
Lexington, MA; Laifong, 30 minutes by bus into Boston)
We bought our first home, a townhouse condominium, in Chestnut
Hill, MA in May 2001; this is where we still live
On March 3, 2002, Laifong gave birth to our son, Caleb James Lee;
Caleb was 5 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. Click here to see some
pictures of Caleb (and us).
We currently attend an Assemblies of God church in Boston, Boston Worship Center,
pastored
by Rev. David Wenrich
Tidbits about
Nigel and Laifong:
We are Christians, and our faith in Jesus Christ is a very
important to us. We occasionally write a devotional
intended for scientists at the Daily Encouragement site. To see another example of our writing, read Nigel's review of The Passion of the Christ.
We both enjoy contemporary Christian music; Nigel's favorite
artist is Twila Paris;
Laifong's favorites are Michael Card and Steve Green
Nigel loves to play and watch sports:
Favorite sports to play are basketball and volleyball; see a
recent picture of Nigel spiking the ball
after a good set
Favorite sports to watch are basketball, football, boxing,
baseball, and tennis
Favorite teams are the Philadelphia 76ers, Eagles, and
Phillies, and the Boston Red Sox (who will someday win the World Series
again)
Least favorite teams are the Boston Celtics, Dallas Cowboys,
New York Giants, and New York Yankees; developed an affinity over the
years to teams that would defeat these teams (including the Pistons,
Lakers, and 49ers)
All-time favorite athletes are Julius Erving, Andrew Toney,
Vinnie Johnson, Hersey Hawkins, Wilbert Montgomery, Reggie White,
Randall Cunningham, Charlie Garner, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Andy
Van Slyke, Curt Schilling, Carl Yastrzemski, Evander Holyfield, Roy
Jones Jr., Jimmy Connors, Michael Chang, and Pete Sampras
Avid collector of sports cards; to see the collection, click here
Favorite board game is also sports-related, a simulation game
called Strat-O-Matic
Nigel's favorites:
Favorite TV shows: Star
Trek
(any type, though the best was TOS and the worst was Voyager) and Friends
Favorite animal: the orangutan
(orang-utan is a Malaysian
word that is literally translated jungle-man!)
Favorite domestic animal: cats (we used to have a short-haired
tabby named Samson, but we had to give Samson to Nigel's parents
because Caleb is allergic to cats, unfortunately)
Favorite class of animals: reptiles! Gatorland Park in Orlando, FL was
the
highlight of our honeymoon, and Arena
(with the reptilian gorn
as Capt. Kirk's adversary) is a beloved Star Trek episode
Favorite board games (besides Strat-O-Matic): chess and Stratego
